WARRIOR IN WHITE
by Lucy Wilson Jopling

The Nimitz Silver Dolphins Chapter of submarine veterans has done a reprint of this 1970 book to honor the wartime services of Lucy Jopling. In World War II, Lucy was an Army nurse at Bataan and was evacuated from Corregidor by submarine at the last minute. She went back to the South Pacific as a Flight Nurse in January 1944 and helped fly out prisoners of war until February 1945.

She married an ex-POW who never fully recovered his health from his imprisonment by the Japanese after the Bataan Death March, but Lucy and Dan raised four children, and Lucy made a new career as a social activist, championing the causes of her special charges: POWs, disabled veterans, widows, and women in general. Her story is an inspiring account of a remarkable woman. For many of us it may be somewhat nostalgic; for younger readers it should provide a role model for the virtues which made America great.

CAMP WALDEMAR:
THE ORAL HISTORY OF DORIS JOHNSON

by Anne Armitstead

In 1928, Ora Johnson, Principal of San Antonio's Brackenridge High School, founded a summer camp for girls at Hunt in the Texas Hill Country.  She wanted to offer girls "such unusual advantages for physical, mental, and moral growth that the camp would draw from every part of the great Southwest."  With a wide program of sports (especially horseback riding), there were also courses in the arts, including music and drama.  The camp was soon a success and today is into a third-generation tradition for teenage girls.

In 1934, Ora's niece, Doris Johnson, took the helm and continued the high principles and exciting activities which have made Waldemar an exemplar of what a summer camp should be. In 1980, Anne Vogelsang Armitstead, whose own daughters had enjoyed summers at Waldemar, sat with Doris Johnson for two interviews which tell the history of the camp and the people who have been associated with it through the years.

This book, written as a project of Baylor University's Institute of Oral History, is the story in Doris' own words, providing a unique perspective on the wonders of Camp Waldemar.

Finding Your Place in the Women's Movement

Finally! The Middle Woman Speaks Up & Out

by Ginger Purdy

For too long, women have allowed minor differences to cause major divisions among them. They have let "those in power" use subtle and not so subtle means to keep women apart. Not Any More! The 4th United Nation's World Conference on Women showed Ginger Purdy that it was time to go public with her "Middle Woman" philosophy. This late-blooming leader is on a crusade to unite "Middle Women" everywhere. - Foreword by Ann Richards.

DEANIE’S STORY
by Jadean Moon Swenso

In 1926, a little girl was born on a cotton farm in Central Texas. Her family called her “Deanie” and watched her grow into a bright little girl with a magical touch for all the animals of the farm and the woods.

Today, Deanie is a grandmother, and she loves to tell stories of her childhood to her two small grandsons. Now she has put her tales into print so other children can enjoy them as Will and Zach do.

Here is a picture of what life was like in the country during the hard days of the Depression; but Deanie had no sense of being poor. Her life was full of adventure and enjoyment as she played with her dog, Scobo, built a dollhouse, played jacks, won a declamation contest in the first grade, and was baptized in the river.

Wonderfully illustrated with watercolors and drawings by Paul Hudgins, the book will take other grandmothers back to their childhood as well as entertaining young people who haven’t known where eggs come from, cows get milked, or how to make ice cream in a hand-turned freezer.

A MAN, A DREAM, A COMPANY

The History of

American Security Life

Insurance Company

by Alice Evett

FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY SUPPLEMENT

The History of

American Security Life Insurance Company

by Alice Evett

Two stories of a historic Texas insurance company

In 1931, the country was still in the throes of the Great Depression, and one of the direst problems for people with low incomes was coping with health problems which could wipe out in a day what little financial security they had managed to achieve.

A young man of foresight studied the situation and developed a program to help cope with the dilemma. What S. E. McCreless of San Antonio came up with was a service for prepaying hospital costs, and making it available at charges as low as pennies a week.

From this small beginning, McCreless grew a company which produced full-fledged hospitalization insurance, life and accident insurance, with branch offices all over Texas and eleven other states, and a reputation not only as a pioneer in the industry but as a leader of integrity and substance.

These two volumes, published in 1980 and 1985, celebrate the history of the company, its founders and employees. Author Alice Evett (now Geron) was editor of publications there

from 1961 until 1973, and returned to the company later to write its definitive histories, and publish the books.
